Why write a review for one of the most well-known and highly rated comic strips of all time? This is another excellent addition to my collection that started in 1989. Buy these books. All of them. You will never be disappointed.
Funny, intelligent, and heart-warming; the adventures that Calvin and Hobbes have together are classic. Like the digital editions of _Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat_ and _Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons_, this one has the ability to zoom and pan on the pages. This highly-appreciated feature allows one to fully experience the details of one of the best comics ever created, particularly with the more dense and lush full-color Sunday edition panels. The are a few strips that are "duplicates" between the other three books I've read and reviewed (_The Essential Calvin and Hobbes_, _Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat_, and _Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons_), but with treasuries such as this, that's not entirely unexpected and the "duplicates" are still funny. ;) I do still wish one could bookmark favorite strips for easy revisit later, but that's my only quibble. Overall, an excellent, highly-recommended digital volume.
I have been collecting Calvin and Hobbes stuff most of my life. I was the um... Girl counterpart, dinosaurs and all. As I have trouble holding books these last years, having the opportunity to reread them via Kindle is a blessing. I used to reread my collection every winter and now I can again. The Days Are Just Packed...with water balloon battles, sled riding philosophical discussions, snow "art" exhibits, dinosaurs, and tiger tummies.
It is my feeling that Bill Watterson had enough integrity and ethics to prevent the syndicate from cranking out endless meaninglessly repetitive compilations. Of course, he did quit partly because he was becoming disgusted with many of the commercial aspects of his work. With most comics, even good ones, the collections get stale after a few. Watterson's collections dont. There are a dozen or so C&H compilations/collections, but you wont be dissapointed with owning the whole shebang, especially since Watterson frequently did a lot of extra work to ensure that each collection had something new to offer. Even without this extra stuff, Watterson's body of work is extensive enought to warrant owning all these collections. He was steadily cranking out great material for a decade or so, and if you are like me you will be reading some C&H weekly for as long as you are on this earth, so tons of books is not a bad thing. Basically, I wholeheartedly reccomend all the books. If you like one you will like them all. They only get better as you get to know the characters. Watterson never goes for the cheap laugh by having any of the comic's principals act out of character. As you progress through the years with C&H, and I do reccomend reading them in order, you will see how art progresses and grows when the artist is committed to excellent work. So, go get the first one, titled simply Calvin & Hobbes, and then start down the enjoyable road to making Calvin and his tiger a pleasant little chunk of your life. (Yes, i have repeated this review for every C&H book I own, wich is all of them, so get used to seeing all this anytime you look one of them up)
"Calvin and Hobbes" are the best. I bought the complete set, which includes every strip. They are as follows, "The Days are Just Packed," "There's Treasure Everywhere," "Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat," "Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons," "It's a Magical World," and "The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes." If you're a fan, this is the only way to go.
The clearest and funniest reconstruction of what it was like to be a boy growing up, wandering the countryside, and seeking the treasures that are everywhere. I remember when exploration was the greatest game, when a cardboard box was a tank or a submarine, and digging was done for fun.So does Bill Watterson. Best Strip Ever!
The wide format books such as this do a great job of presenting the cartoon in a format that more closely resembles the way it was drawn. The print quality is excellent and the colored Sunday pages are fantastic.
From the best cartoonist ever! This is typical C and H, packed with insights, great truths and wonderful humor, all wrapped up in marvelous artwork as only Bill Watterson could do it. Thank you, Bill Watterson.
