This was my first Henri Nouwen book I have ever read, and I've never felt more connected to another author in my entire life. Every entry he wrote, I felt like he was pulling it straight from my heart. I now have been collecting his writings and I continue to feel that way. He has such a way of connecting with anyone and everyone who is struggling with depression, faith, etc. I bought more copies so I can give them to friends. It's an easy read, each "chapter" is short, and you don't necessarily have to read it in any particular order. It's phenomenal. Get it!
Henri Nouwen puts into words what we think and feel. It is a remarkable gift. I am amazed at how an intellectually brilliant man can write with such simplicity yet profoundness. I cannot say enough about him and his writings. Very few can combine academic erudition and human suffering. This comes from absorbing both worlds, a destiny not common to many. This books describes his darkest hour, and it speaks to those of us who have travelled a similar path.He frames truth and pain in uncommon ways. It shows that he has thought deeply about his struggles, both with God and man. If you have travelled a season of spiritual anguish, then you will identify with Nouwen. His thoughts will give you hope and courage to continue the journey. It can be read in one day, but should be read a chapter a day. After this, I highly recommend you read his book "Reaching Out".
Nearly 21 years after his death, Henri's life and writings continue to inspire me along with many countless others. Even though he was a Catholic and I am a Protestant, his understanding of God and closeness to Him tells me that I have many more things to learn about God the Father. I have read some of Henri's other works, and have watched him speak on YouTube. He was an amazing man and I am grateful that I have discovered his work. In this particular book, Henri lays wide open the pain in his soul as he struggled with his humanity. You can almost hear him quote Jesus, as the Lord faced his impending death: "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" I am grateful that his colleagues talked him into sharing these deeply personal writings with us; it gives me hope that I too can weather the storms of life.
I love to read. You already know that about me. I always say after reading a book, "It'll change your life." I get made fun of all the time for it.Michele Cushatt, Author recommended a book several months ago and I bought it. I'd never heard of Henri Nouwen up to that point.It's taken me almost 3 months to get through this book. It has wrecked me emotionally and spiritually in good ways.It's opened my eyes to toxic thoughts and emotions I've believed about myself and others.Nouwen's words have brought me to my knees in repentance for relying more on relationships and validation than the love of God.It took me 3 days to journal through one paragraph.He says in the introduction.."Everything came crashing down - my self-esteem, my energy to live and work, my sense of being loved, my hope for healing, my trust in God... everything. Here I was, a writer about the spiritual life, known as someone who loves God and gives hope to people, flat on the ground and in total darkness.Just when all those around me were assuring me they loved me, cared for me, appreciated me, yes, even admired me, I experienced myself as a useless, unloved, and despicable person."Yes... Yes... It's like he was sitting right beside me knowing exactly what I was feeling.Nouwen's words brought me to a more intimate place with Christ. A place I was and still am desperate for.This book... I have so much to say, yet it has left me speechless. This is essential Nouwen: spiritually rich, honest, theologically sound. It is meant to be read, reflected on, and prayed with in small pieces. He leads us into deep waters of a wide range of feelings, his own spiritual journey, and how God both accompanies and draws us even deeper. This is a book that is spiritual friend -- meant to be encountered over and over. It nourishes and feeds the soul.
All of Nouwen's works are uplifting and outstanding. This one, however, dares you to find a relationship with God, and God alone. Stripped of all distractions and relationships, Nouwen finds a deeper well of joy in his relationship with God and with others. He also finds an inner peace he didn't know was possible. This is one of those books that you can read over and over and still find new ideas and spiritual insights every time you read it.
This book contains a series of small packets of words that Henri was led to by his guides during his low period that served as daily meditations to lead him from darkness to light. Some profoundly rang true to me as what I needed to be seeing for my healing.I will read it again and again, if not the entire book but those "chapters" that resonate with me.This is a healing book that I would highly recommend to anyone who has wounds to heal and I am pretty sure that includes all of us!
As I read this book, one chapter at a time, I felt as if it could have been written about my own torment. Nouwen captures the essence of the struggle of the dying and death of ego as we go through the dark night of the soul in such a way that it could be anyone's story. The light and hope he gives the ordeal spoke directly to me and gave me the assurance that I am not alone in my struggles and desires.
